Chapter 18

MIRANDA BURST THROUGH the door of Carmen’s apartment and shouted, “I solved the case!”

“You scared me half to death!” Carmen gasped, her hands flew to her chest as a spoon she’d been using to stir a pot on the stove went clattering to the floor. She was wearing her usual outfit of comfortable athletic pants and a t-shirt from one of many wheelchair races Carmen had competed in.

“I’m sorry,” Miranda smiled apologetically, sweeping Georgy up into her arms and giving her a smacking kiss on her fuzzy cheek. “I solved the case, Georgy! Are you excited?”

“Did you bring egg noodles?” Carmen asked, glancing around Miranda to see if perhaps she’d dropped a grocery bag on her way in the door.

“Oh, crap!” Miranda set Georgy down and told her to stay and raced back out the door, heading across the parking lot to Nylund’s.

Fridays were Joy’s day off so Miranda skirted the darkened deli area and cruised directly to the pasta aisle, scanning the shelves as quickly as she could. Grabbing the most expensive package of “homemade” noodles, Miranda hurried back to the frozen food section. Carmen was partial to frozen lemonade pie and Miranda sent up a silent prayer to the dessert gods as she grabbed the last pie out of the case.

Peace offering complete, she thought as she scooted up to the cash register.

The cashiers at Nylund’s were selected for their friendliness but Miranda was in no mood to deal with a loquacious bagger, tapping her foot as she rushed through the transaction.

“I don’t mean to be rude,” she told the young man behind the register, “I’m just in a huge hurry.”

“I understand,” he gave her a salacious wink. “Have a great time tonight!”

Miranda shook her head and chuckled as she hit the doorway and bounded across the parking lot back to Carmen’s apartment. No harm in letting the kid’s imagination run wild. That was the only place Miranda was going to get any action.

“I think you may have set a land speed record,” Carmen joked, pointing to the pot on the stove. “The water’s not even boiling yet.”

“I’m sorry I’m late,” Miranda apologized again, before launching back into the news she’d unsuccessfully attempted to share earlier. “You will not believe what I found out!”

“Is that a frozen lemonade pie?” Carmen made a grab for the box.

“Last one.”

“All is forgiven,” Carmen wheeled the pie over to the refrigerator and slipped it into the freezer, gesturing for Miranda to go sit in the living room as she followed behind. “Your meatball privileges have been restored. Let’s have a drink while you spill the beans.”

“Pretty!” Miranda admired the blue beverage in the glass shaker that sat on Carmen’s drink cart in the corner of the living room. Since Carmen had already delayed this conversation once, Miranda decided to do a little delaying of her own. “What’s it called?”

“Sex in the Driveway,” Carmen grinned as she dropped slices of lime into two tall vintage glasses of ice and filled the glasses halfway with grapefruit soda.
